Okta vs Microsoft Entra ID: Choosing Your Identity Provider

The short version

  • Both are strong identity platforms; fit depends on your stack.
  • Entra ID is compelling if you are deep in Microsoft 365.
  • Okta is neutral and shines across a diverse, multi-vendor app estate.
  • Consider lock-in, integrations and who will administer it.

Once you decide to centralise sign-on, the next question is which identity provider. Okta and Microsoft Entra ID are both excellent, and the right choice is genuinely situational. Here is the honest version, without the vendor pitch.

The case for Entra ID

If your organisation already lives in Microsoft 365, Entra ID is compelling:

  • It is included with many Microsoft 365 plans, so the cost story is attractive.
  • It integrates natively and tightly with the rest of the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • For a largely-Microsoft estate, it is the path of least resistance.

The case for Okta

Okta's strength is breadth and neutrality:

  • A vast catalogue of pre-built integrations across the whole SaaS landscape.
  • Vendor independence, it does not assume you are a Microsoft shop.
  • It shines when your app estate is diverse and multi-vendor, and it still does Microsoft 365 sign-on cleanly.
Entra ID rewards committing to Microsoft. Okta rewards staying neutral. Pick the bet you want to make.

The questions that actually decide it

  • How Microsoft-centric are you? Deep in 365 tilts toward Entra ID.
  • How diverse is your app estate? Lots of non-Microsoft SaaS tilts toward Okta.
  • How much do you care about lock-in? A neutral layer has long-term value.
  • Who will run it? Match the platform to your team's skills.

Whichever you choose, the fundamentals are the same

Both platforms only deliver their value if you roll them out with group-based access, strong multi-factor authentication and tested break-glass accounts, the principles in our Okta rollout guide apply to either. The provider is the smaller decision; the rollout discipline is the bigger one.

Frequently asked

If we use Microsoft 365, should we just use Entra ID?

Often, but not always. Entra ID is included and integrates tightly with Microsoft 365, which is attractive. But if you run many non-Microsoft apps or want a vendor-neutral identity layer, Okta's breadth of integrations and independence can be worth it.

Can we use Okta and still get great Microsoft 365 sign-on?

Yes. Okta integrates cleanly with Microsoft 365 as covered in our Okta and Microsoft 365 guide. Many organisations run Okta as the front door and Microsoft 365 behind it without compromise.
